Port Douglas and the reef
After a quick pitstop in Cairns we travelled further north to the resort town of Port Douglas. A good place but one with a serious identity crisis, with it being home to the most popular nudist resort in australia (The White Cockatoo), a bar that has nightly cane toad races, a championship 18 hole golf course and the regular appearance of hollywood stars who use the location's varied landscapes for filming (apparantly Tom Hanks has just left).
The main reason for our visit was getting on a boat and travelling out to the Great Barrier Reef. We did this with a company called Haba and got to dive and snorkel around the colourful corals of the Agincourt Reef and saw plenty of wildlife including Nemo, a couple of Christmas Tree Worms and a Blue-spotted Ray. A truly amazing place that will hopefully still be there for our kids to see but with beers on the boat going for $5 a pop you can't help wondering if it's really worth saving (not).
